Endocrinology
Is it my hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers which regulate normal bodily functions.
Imbalanced hormones (endocrine disorders) can impact metabolism, bone health, reproduction, weight, energy and mood, among other systems.

Bone health
Osteopenia is a condition of reduced bone density. Osteoporosis is a more severe form of bone loss that can lead to fractures with minor trauma. Both conditions can be caused by hormonal imbalances.
Treatment may involve exercise, a healthy diet and medications to strengthen bone.
Thyroid Disorders
The thyroid gland controls metabolism. Hypothyroidism symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Hyperthyroidism symptoms include weight loss, anxiety, and tremors.
Treatment may involve medication, surgery, or radioactive iodine therapy to balance the gland’s activity.

Polycystic ovary syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, excess hair growth, and acne. It may also increase the risk of infertility, diabetes, and heart disease.
Treatment may involve medication, lifestyle changes, and fertility treatments.
Lipid disorders
Lipid disorders are imbalances in the levels of fats in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. These disorders can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Treatment may involve lifestyle changes, medication and regular monitoring.

Electrolyte disorders
Abnormal regulation by endocrine glands such as the pituitary, parathyroid and adrenal, can cause an imbalance of minerals like sodium, potassium, and calcium (electrolytes).
These electrolyte imbalances can cause symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness, nausea, headache, and confusion.
Pituitary
Sometimes called the “master gland”, the pituitary produces hormones that control many other glands in the body, including the thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive glands.
Pituitary disorders may cause symptoms including fatigue, headaches, and vision changes, which may require treatment with medication or surgery.

Adrenal
The adrenal glands produce hormones that regulate blood pressure, metabolism, and the body’s response to stress.
Adrenal disorders occur when the glands produce too much or too little of these hormones, leading to a range of symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and changes in blood pressure.
Specialist care
As an endocrinologist, Dr Lucy Ding is a physician specialised in diagnosing and treating hormone imbalances and disorders of the endocrine glands.
As a chemical pathologist, her in-depth knowledge of biochemical testing allows her to provide comprehensive care to patients with endocrine disorders, ensuring accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
